The History of Torture. By Daniel P Mannix. Dell, 1964.
No cover credit.
This is the
first printing, and a Dell original.
Mannix was a many-faceted guy, according to Wikipedia, having been “an
American author, journalist, photographer, sideshow performer, stage magician,
animal trainer, and filmmaker.” And he
wrote a book The Fox and the Hound which Disney made into a
cartoon movie.
But this tome is all about man’s inhumanity to man—the theory as well as the practice of—umm, let’s call it “forceful coercion.”
The
illustrations are line drawings or prints from past histories of terrors.
Perhaps too
ironically, above is the bookmark for the book.
