Their tagline was "King of Hot dogs, USA."
They had paper crowns for the kids, just like the crowns at Burger King. Here, print your own!

The building is still there, now being used as Jaron Leach's Shelter Insurance office.I found this photo of a Wiener King in Mansfield, OH, which is a good match to what the place looked like when it opened.
For me, the most disgusting thing on the menu was a dog with cole slaw, onions, pickle relish, and CHILI also! Yuck! But I remember seeing Mr Schooler eat one.
And that's the summer job I had the year before we got married.
See you on Monday!
Mark, I am Don Schooler and your blog about Remembering Wiener King brought back many memories. I apologize but I do not remember you but then again this was almost 43 years ago. The Wiener King Special, that you thought was "YUCK" did not have pickle relish. It consisted of mustard, onions, Cheese Whiz, coleslaw, and chili and was delicious. Thank you for the memories you have given to me.

I lived in Myrtle Beach in the 1970's and remember Weiner King hotdogs as being the best hot dogs I'd ever eaten. Wish they were still around. It does say something about a restaurant that is still being remembered almost 50 years later!

It was great miss it
DeleteI STAND CORRECTED ON THE CONTENTS OF THE WIENER KING SPECIAL!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your note Mr Schooler! You were a good boss even though some of the high-school kids probably didn't take the job too seriously. I am thankful to have had the job.
Mark, thanks for the memory. I was googling Wiener King and came across this blog. My dad owned a Wiener King in Fort Myers, FL opening in 1976 and selling in 1984. Mr. Schooler was 100% correct with the contents of the Wiener King special and I agree, it was delicious. I still make them at home to this day. They are definitely a gut buster though. Mr. Schooler's operation was probably similar to my dad's...younger high school kids and I worked there from the time I was 10-16. Wiener King is long gone but the building is still there and operating as a restaurant. My dad and I went there for lunch this past week.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your own Wiener King memories, Nick!
