A Tolkien Naysayer

In a column called "Between the Lines," a Maryland scholar says he doesn't like The Lord of the Rings very much.
This is from the journal America of February 18, 1967.  If such heresy were expressed today, would Father Schroth be burned at the stake or tarred and feathered?
