You know my mom was cool because, FIRST she read these articles, and SECOND she clipped 'em because she knew I would want to read 'em!  Now that's motherly love!

    

Keep Your Athelas-Pickin' Hands Offa Tolkien!

 Well, that's what the letter to the editor said.  First, the English Journal's four pages on how Lord of the Rings might be worthy of being taken seriously by scholars.  It's from/ the October 1967 issue.

I don't know what OTHER letters the Journal received, but I came across this one from a scornful teacher in the February 1968 issue.

You gotta admit, Ms Stein has a point.  As soon as the grownups say a book is good, half the kids will drop it like a stinky report card.  She was also prescient, if you take her comments about paperback editions driving readership.

Is Stein's opinion true today?  Would youngsters be chased away from a work due to adult acclaim?  Or has today's juvenile pop culture absorbed everybody?

Can Your Pounding Hearts Stand the Stupendousness?

 Yes, that was the question every few weeks in the late 1980s, as readers gasped to learn if the new issue of Amazing Heroes might contain a missive from the legendary Sidney Mellon!

Mellon was a constructed stereotypical fanboy (I infer) used to make fun of (and celebrate) some of the thud and blunder of comics fandom.  His missives might appear in the letters section.  Or a review, filled with hyperbolic prose worshiping the most grandiose excesses of (unknowing) self-importance, might tag the "new comics" section.

This two-page opus adorned the Amazing Heroes issue for February 29, 1988.  Dare you brave the awesomosity of Mellon's incisive prose?

How Many Supers Again?

Come with me now to the fabled times of yesteryear, that annum designated 1993, when DC Comics decided to play hide-the-Kryptonian-cucumber with Superman's fans.

These images came from Diamond Comics' solicitation mag called Previews.

I can only assume that I nabbed it from my friends Mike Kennedy and John Hunter, owners of OKC's Planet Comics.  Speaking of whom ...

The April 16, 1993 Oklahoman covered some of the foofaraw with a nice article containing a photo taken at Planet.

Were you innocent once, and cared which and who was the "real" Superman?  IMO, the "real" Superman drowned in a remixing bowl.  (This blog honors his ideals.)

Gitcher Own Graphic Book and Peel Off!

 In the months on either side of the release of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the hearts of fans were all a-twitter in our quest for tie-ins to the movie.

Among other things, we bought Trix cereal.  Of course, if I'd sent in this coupon, I wouldn't be able to show it off now!  I bought the book at the B Dalton's in Crossroad mall.

In fact, I bought more than one so I could use some of the peel-off stickers, and still have a complete book!  But I sold the "nice" copy long ago, only the imperfect remains behind (kinda like me).

Everything Not A-OK on Bizarro World!

... As you will learn from this June 1, 1984 feature on Superman Family members the Bizarros, which appeared in Amazing Heroes.

Being a little contrary myself, I have a friendly intimacy with the whole being bizarre idea.

Remember, is big crime to make anything perfect!  So, in the spirit of my alter-ego Bizarro No 1, I sincerely say, "Don't come back on Thursday!"
