April 1971/2021's Calendar Page

The fourth month of 2021 --- or 1971.

I can't tell you why this month is red!  However, one way in which 1971 differs from 2021 is in the placing of Easter.  This year, Palm Sunday was March 28, and Easter is April 4th.  Be warned!

Crazy Ol' Ed Greer? I Never Met the Man

But I did collect his coupon, because Mazeppa told me so!

This would have been a great deal, but I never made it to any Greer Stereo Tape Centers.  What did I miss?  

Of course, if I'd've taken advantage of this wonderful offer, I wouldn't have this treat to share with YOU 50 years later!  You can tell, of course, that the coupon is made to fit as a vertical insert into a carboard six-pack carrier for glass bottles?

The World Premiere of My Mazeppa Song!

Yes, some time in 1971, I decided that Mazeppa Pompazoidi needed a theme song.

It's supposed to be sung to the tune for the song "More," aka "The Theme from Mondo Cane."

I must note two important things:

1. I didn't spell "Mazeppa" correctly
2.  Being a clueless 15-year-old, I never did anything with the thing -- until now!
   

And now the whole world knows the truth about "The Mezeppa Song."  See you on Monday with another relic from the Seventies!

In this article from the March 29, 1995 Tulsa World, John Wooley avers that Gailard Sartain is a natural to play Oliver Hardy.

Love the Signs, Hate the Fish

One of the funnest parts of watching the Uncanny Film Festival and Camp Meeting is getting glimpses of Gailard Sartain's graphic genius.  So today we'll look at a couple of the silly signs he made for the diner set which was used for an ongoing set of silly vignettes.

Two tuna-riffic signs may be glimpsed on each side of Sherman Oaks as he sits at the diner counter.

Last year we shared some info about the decadent Mazeppa single "Scope Them Turkeys Out."  Today we feature the luscious picture sleeve for this bona fide goofy classic.

We commence this month with a salute to mine own dear mater, the mistress of stitchery, who made my Mazeppa outfit in 1971 (which I still possess and treasure, by the way!).

A more beautiful, patient, loving woman could not be found ... until I met and wooed She Who Is My Wife!  So, let's have a salute from all Mazeppites to Mary Lou!

My Little Lamby

For this last post in this February month of love, I’m gonna tell you about my oldest friend.

My little Lamby may not look like much now, but she’s been my friend since the beginning. I have a feeling that Mom made her from terrycloth and filled her with foam rubber. Her eyes and nose are flannel dots. Sometime before my tenth birthday I got ahold of a black magic marker. I colored her eyes and made her nose a heart. You CAN see that her nose is a heart, right? 

Here I am at three months old. Mom took this picture of (L-R) Sue, Dad holding me (and me holding Lamby), and Robert. Mom made matching shirts.

I’m six months old in the above photo. Note that my blanket’s made from the same cloth as our shirts in the previous photo.

Little Lamby’s filling has mostly crumbled. Nowadays she tends to settle according to the dictates of gravity. I propped her up here, in the Fortress of Markitude, overlooked in the background by a photo of my three-year-old self.

Here we are, in a photo taken by someone who’s an even better friend. Lamby and I don’t cuddle much any more, out of respect for her brittle condition. But she has stuck with me for some 64 years now, and I ain’t gonna ditch her now!

Now, Lamby isn’t a showoff. Usually she just hangs out on a display shelf with other items of alternately detritus or treasure status.

Someday I’ll tell you about Kitty-Cat. Until then, tell me—do you have any long-lived friends from babyhood or childhood?
