You too can saddle up! This article is from the January 21, 2001 Tulsa World. Not only can you buy Volumes 1-3 at Mazzeppa.com, you can buy ALL FOUR DVDs and get free shipping and a special package price!
Good ol' Muh-ZAY-puh may not be Irish, but I got some. So here's a memory that's at least PARTIALLY green ...
As revealed in 2019, I got myself one of them there Underground Cards rapidly.
It rests on display in a place of honor in the Fortress of Markitude. Come on over and see it sometime! Until then, check back on Monday for more MARCH MAZEPPA MADNESS!!!!
It's from the July 20, 1970 Tulsa World. And by the way, those are glass bottles. You can bet that ol' Muh-ZAY-puh was very careful when getting this pose set up.
And if you didn't know by now, "Delmo Gillette" of the platinum voice was none other than Gary Chew.
One of the many skits was Shy King, a take-off (GET IT?) on the old syndicated show Sky King.
One precocious soul has uploaded ONE of these skits, viewable above. However, the one which sticks most in my memory relies on a silly little bit of prep.
The model plane used in the skits was sitting "on the runway" at rest. It was drenched in lighter fluid. Off-camera, "Shy" said, "Fire up the Songbird, Penny!" -- so someone dropped a lit match, and the plane burned up.
Remember, you can buy one or all volumes of The Lost Tapes of Mazeppa by visiting the shop. The screengrab seen above is from the Shy King skit seen in Tape 4, which MAY or MAY NOT be the one in the video above, or the "on fire" installment I remember.
Now, that's funny! -- at least when you're 13. See you Monday.
These 1962 valentines are proof that we can all just get along, no matter our tribe!
Can't you tell by now? I love all y'all! And you can prove your love for me by coming back TOMORROW, March 1st, for the commencement of 2022's MARCH MAZEPPA MADNESS!
I notice a trend of "old-time" imagery. Above are 1920s-1930s outfits ...
And doggie crossing guard is decked out as if in a Laurel-and-Hardy short.
Nothing old-fashined about love, though. I hope you have some! See you Monday for the final round of this year's MY SIXTIES VALENTINE! Dare we say it --- It's a DATE!
I got these in Mrs West's First-Grade class. Sure, they were probably bought in bulk by our parents, but that doesn't mean my six-year-old manliness wasn't affrighted by such mushiness.
I mean, I didn't want to be anybody's "Queen of Hearts"!
Above is the valentine I received from Mom and Dad in thew year I was in Kindergarten. That's 1962.
And above is the valentine from our Kindergarten teacher, Mrs Pickell. Since there were between 15 and 20 of us in that class, I bet she got writer's cramp addressing and signing them all! Can any classmates confirm if we all got the same one?
Happy Valentine's Day to all of you buckaroos and toots! See you Thursday!
That's right, February will feature scans of Valentines I received in 1962 and 1963 -- that's Kindergarten and First Grade.
In those olden days, everybody gave a valentine to everybody else. Each kid made an envelope out of construction paper and decorated it. Our teachers sent home a list of all the kids in the class. It was up to the kid's mom and dad to buy enough valentines for distribution.
The pouch above is from the First Grade. That's the class of Mrs Lorene West, at Will Rogers Elementary, in good ol' Bartlesville, OK.
As you'll see, sometimes an adult hand wrote. But I personally treasure the ones with shaky kid writing. That's how I still write, you know!
That's Mary Ann Gragson, who lived a few doors up the hill from us.
I was born at a very early age, in a hospital to be near my mother. After appearing in productions of both GODSPELL and JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR in the 1970s, I found a wonderful wife and wrote many love songs to her, but not as many love songs as I write to God my Savior and Redeemer. We have three kids (one of each) -- wait for it -- blonde, brunette, and redhead.
